Nicemode Charles ABOUT ME

ABOUT ME

I took this photo during my first few weeks at Agnes Scott. This image symbolizes many experiences for me, among them is transitioning to a new environment. The green from the image relates to my country back home. Tanzania has a massive landscape and fertile soil, therefore, there are various vegetation that are grown. Being surrounded by nature allows me to find peace and calmness. From the media I have been exposed to, America has been portrayed as a very well built country with little to no green space. This made me develop a perception that it will be lacking in vegetation because of so much construction. Coming to the USA this summer, made me reject that single story as I realized that there is a lot of vegetation grown and it is very well taken care of. People in America invest more on the grass by employing people to take care of it weekly or even daily. This is different from my experience back home as you would only see a few people investing in the grass as a majority do not have funds to hire experts to do it.  While I have seen that there is a lot of vegetation in the United States just like Tanzania, there are many differences in these two countries as there are similarities within them. I am learning to appreciate every one of them and avoid having personal bias. The picture for me symbolizes a new home, one that is somewhat similar in climate, environment and culture with my country. Georgia is a place of very diverse culture and beautiful landscape and I am looking forward to exploring it.

Nicemode was born in Morogoro, Tanzania. She has lived there all her life until she moved recently to the United States to attend Agnes Scott College as a class of 2021. She has a younger sister who goes boarding school in Tanzania and both her parents work for the government. Her dream growing up was to become a doctor as she was very interested in sciences especially Biology and Chemistry. During her high school year, she was determined to get a career in the science field. Nicemode loves working with women and children therefore most of the extra-curricular activities she participated in involved helping women or children. She wants to help women and children in the society because she thinks this is an inferior group that is always affected by the government’s decision on many things. For example, in the health sector back in her country most women and children to do not have access to proper health care hence increasing the number of death that group. Most girls in Tanzania do not get a chance to go to school because of financial constraints or that they are discouraged by parents to go to school. The parents normally force young girls to get married early so that they can get dowry prices from the man marrying their daughter. This is something that Nicemode is passionate to change, she wants to educate the community on the importance of education and hopefully inspire young girls to go to school.
