Global Themes

{Author’s Note: As part of the first year course requirement we took a Global Class for 2 semesters. In the first semester, we explored the topic of food as a global theme and in my second semester we explored how the themes of self-identity, globalization, and colonialism can be seen from different countries}

To become a mindful traveler one needs to understand that there is a story behind everything that we see. Personally before coming to New York, Rochester at the University of Rochester I had a stereotype about the city itself and the people living in the city. To say the truth I was close-minded as most of my information and sources were from movies and other things we see on TV.  Taking the Global 102 class at Agnes Scott College made me learn about the history of New York itself in terms of how it was a safe harbor for many immigrants and was a center of the world’s economic activities back in history and up to date. The themes we explored in the course are Self Identity, Globalization, and Colonialism. We, therefore, learned how New York had a very diverse community from all over the world whose main aim of coming to America was starting a new better life. We saw how colonialism in New York City led to various acts of violence that were accelerated by globalization. The main thing that resonated with me was how developing countries were affected by globalization and colonialism and hence affects the native’s identities until now. We also saw how team engagement and perseverance saved many lives, especially when fighting against imperialists and companies that wanted to exploit low-income individuals especially women.
